The Growing Music Industry and the Legacy of Its Icons

Music has always moved with technology. The phonograph, the radio, the cassette, the compact disc, and now the streaming app have each reshaped how songs are made, sold, and heard. Today the music industry is growing again, with global recorded-music revenue climbing year after year, a stadium touring business that sets new records, and a generation of artists who understand business as well as they understand melody. That growth did not appear from nowhere. It was built by performers who stretched what a musician could be: Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, and many others. Their legacies show how an art form becomes an industry, and how the best artists end up changing the rules of that industry.

Michael Jackson: The Artist as Global Event
Michael Jackson turned the pop album into a worldwide cultural event. Thriller, released in 1982, became one of the best-selling albums in history, and its title video treated a music video as a short film with choreography, a story, and a cinematic budget. At the same time, Jackson's success helped break down barriers at the young MTV network, which had been slow to play Black artists. His 1983 performance of "Billie Jean" on the television special celebrating Motown's anniversary introduced the moonwalk to millions and showed that a single live moment could define a career. Jackson proved that a musician could be a visual, athletic, and technological innovator as well as a singer. Whatever the controversies that surrounded his later life, his influence on pop performance, video production, and the scale of a global release is hard to overstate. Nearly every modern pop star who dances, directs, or plans an album as a multimedia rollout is working in the world he helped create.

Dolly Parton: Songwriter, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist
If Jackson showed how big a pop star could become, Dolly Parton showed how far a songwriter could reach beyond the stage. Parton wrote both "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You," and she kept control of her publishing, a decision that later gave her lasting financial independence when the latter became a global hit for another artist. She built a business empire that includes Dollywood, and she used her fame for good through the Imagination Library, a program launched in 1995 that mails free books to young children. Her legacy is also one of unusual goodwill: she is admired across political, generational, and genre lines. Parton's career teaches two lessons that younger artists have absorbed. First, ownership matters, because the person who controls the songs controls the future. Second, a musician's public identity can be built on generosity and authenticity rather than conflict.

Kanye West: Producer, Disruptor, and Cautionary Tale
Kanye West began as a producer, and that background changed hip-hop. His early work with soul samples gave the genre a warm, melodic sound, and his debut album The College Dropout in 2004 blended personal vulnerability with ambition. Later projects such as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy pushed rap toward maximalist, experimental production, and his influence can be heard across hip-hop and pop. West also expanded the artist's brand into fashion through Yeezy, proving that a musician's taste could become a commercial platform. His legacy, however, is complicated. His public statements in recent years, including antisemitic remarks that led to the loss of major business partnerships, have damaged his reputation and prompted a serious conversation about separating artistic influence from personal conduct. West's story shows that creative genius and public responsibility are not the same thing, and that a legacy is shaped by choices as much as by talent.

Taylor Swift: Ownership and the Modern Superstar
Taylor Swift represents the current peak of the industry's growth. Her Eras Tour, which ran from 2023 to 2024, became the highest-grossing concert tour of all time, earning well over a billion dollars and giving a boost to the cities it visited. Yet her most lasting contribution may be about ownership. After a dispute over the master recordings of her early albums, Swift re-recorded them, encouraging fans to choose her new versions and demonstrating that an artist's audience could shift the balance of power with a record label. In 2025 she announced that she had bought back her original masters, completing the story. Her example has inspired conversations about contracts, rights, and fair pay across the industry, and she has shown that a loyal, engaged fan community is one of the most valuable assets in modern music.

Other Voices: Prince, Beyoncé, and the Expanding Field
Swift was not the first to fight for her work. Prince famously clashed with his record label in the 1990s over control of his music, writing a word on his face and changing his name to draw attention to the issue. Beyoncé has combined commercial dominance with artistic risk, from the surprise release of her self-titled album in 2013 to Cowboy Carter, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2025 and challenged assumptions about who belongs in country music. Alongside them, a global wave of artists from Latin America, Africa, and Asia, supported by streaming platforms that ignore borders, are bringing new sounds to international audiences. The industry is growing not just in revenue but in diversity.

Conclusion
The growth of the music industry is the sum of these legacies. Michael Jackson expanded the scale and spectacle of pop. Dolly Parton demonstrated the power of songwriting, ownership, and kindness. Kanye West transformed production and branding while reminding us that conduct shapes legacy. Taylor Swift and others have pushed the business toward artist control. As technology continues to change how music is shared, these artists leave a clear lesson: the artists who last are those who innovate creatively, protect their work, and connect with the people who listen. The next generation will build on that foundation, and the industry will keep growing as long as it keeps making room for new voices.

I do hope that you ghosts vote to lynch @Ajs as well. Take this to the final end
You do know that the ghost votes only break ties. If you want this game to end in a tie then I suggest you vote Abs instead of ajsbus. Then we could get a three way tie in here

To the ghosts of this once-mighty cruise ship,

I come before you asking for your support should this voyage end in a tie.

I've fought hard, survived the chaos, navigated the lies, and somehow managed to stay afloat while bodies piled up around us.

I didn't abandon ship. I didn't hide in a lifeboat. I stayed aboard and played this game to the bitter end.

Now, if the living cannot determine a winner, I ask that those who have gone before us decide who deserves the victory.

Judge me not by the enemies I've made, but by the game I've played. I've given this voyage everything I had.

So, my dearly departed shipmates, I ask for your vote. Let this old sailor finally sail into port victorious.

And remember, a vote for AJS is a vote for someone who hasn't personally killed any of you. At least not that I can recall.

I didnt know the ghosts only could influence ties, and only are taken into account when there is a tie

Ghosts
- Players that die become ghosts and can haunt the ship and other players. Ghosts can not talk in the game except for the redirected/secret PM. violators will have a letter in their name revealed.
- Ghosts can pick a room to enter each night phase and listen to the chat. If the ghosts outnumber the living players in a room by more than 1= all living players in the room die. If the living players outnumber the ghosts in a room by more that 1 = ghosts give up the ghost and are eliminated completely from the game. Ghosts can go to the guest services desk instead of a room and ask any 1 yes/no question.
- in case of a tie vote = privately submitted ghosts votes will break the tie.
- ghost can not steal items from living players but can steal from each other if in the same room (guest services is not a room) however living players can steal from ghosts.
