[/quote] Here's the solution: When villagers are debating who to kill, the mafia are also allowed to comment and vote on who to kill. Obviously they will only vote for villagers to be killed, so that way you can know who the mafia are by deduction. Those are the rules that I play. Basically, everyone can comment on who to kill, that way the mafia remain anonymous during the day phases.

Also there are villagers with a special role, they often give hints to their fellow villagers (although not too obvious, because the mafia will kill them next).
